Demonte Colony - Fright night!

Looks like the chills in Kollywood isn’t going to settle down any sooner. Scary movies are continuing to make merry at the box office by managing to weave their spells on the audiences. ‘Demonte Colony’ directed by debutant Ajay Gnanamuthu is the latest to join the scary bandwagon. Though the standard “movie based on fiction” disclaimer was put out before the start of the movie, it cannot be denied that the director has extrapolated the rumor mill around Demonte Colony’s reputation as a haunted area. So it can also be termed as a semi-fiction that makes it an attractive proposition to spread the scares.

Four jobless youngsters (Arulnidhi, Sananth, Ramesh and Abhishek) struggle to make ends meet, decide on a rainy night to set out for an adventure by making an entry into a haunted house at Demonte colony even after knowing the imminent danger of visiting the place. The movie is all about how they get doomed once they return from the place with the ghost weaving its evil spell on each of them.

The movie heavily leans on its plot point of the haunted place at Demonte colony without any comedy tracks spun into it. Also a solid backstory for the same was narrated which was also creepy enough. The mechanics employed to bring about the scares were convincing enough that we tend to jerk at times. Also the scares were infused in a way that was so casual that we fail to notice it at times and half the ‘freaking out’ happens when we realize that the ghost is always there on the screen, just waiting to pounce at the right time.

Arulnidhi has got another tailor-made role, but this time he has put in his few cents as well and has dished out a good performance. Among the others, it was debutant Sananth who scores over the others most of the times.

Apart from a few lame scenes, one that involves Arulnithi being almost like a submissive slave to a wixen-like ‘Jangiri’ Madhumitha and the quintessential ‘sarakku’ number, this movie stood tall to deliver the scares with a no-nonsense attitude.

Verdict: Above average
